NIL is a great triumph for paying college athletes their deserved money for bringing in astronomical sums of money for the college or university that they represent. Unfortunately, the team suffers due to the lack of contractual obligations of these players and the feasibility of easily transferring to other programs in the transfer portal. I agree that it is high time that these athletes that the schools prosper off of get paid for their image and likeness, however, I also believe that just like in any job these players should be obligated to sign contracts in order to stabilize the team dynamic of whichever school they represent.
NIL has been a boon for college (and sometimes high school) athletes. This, along with the transfer portal, is the true indication of the downfall of big time college athletics. How these 2 issues have been administered by the NCAA is an outright disaster and causing a huge chasm on the college scene!! Coaches are leaving, players are transferring and signing for more money and what was once called ‘hush money’ is now legalized. There is little school loyalty among athletes and rivalries are being broken up due to ‘conference realignment’ or GREED, whichever you prefer to call it. I agree with having contractual obligations for the players while I disagree that coaches should be held to there contractual agreements. Possibly, the answer would be one year agreements for both the athlete and the coach. Tommy Lasorda lived with them for decades!!!
